STOP Right There!
Right now I am sitting on the floor of the apartment I moved out of on the weekend waiting for a guy to come and fix a wall that had been damaged…
Why am I telling you this? Because I let myself down and ripped the world off by getting away from my purpose over the last few days – let me elaborate….
What I value most are my family, changing as many people’s lives as possible through PEPT and saving lives through our young driver education programs at The Jason Rich Foundation. These are the things that I love spending my time doing
Sometimes we get off track and as Steven Covey puts it “get caught in the thick of thin things.” Basically what that means is we get caught up doing things we think are important but really in the scheme of our lives and our purpose they are very minor. For me this was a big lesson with me moving house over the weekend (and right now and even tomorrow to get the carpets cleaned)…
Normally I would spend a bit of my weekend working and the rest relaxing and recharging my batteries – this leaves me fresh to attack the week full of steam so I see it as incredibly important. Because I got caught in the thick of thin things I lost at least a whole day of my life that I’ll never get back cleaning etc and as a result will now be able to help less people through PEPT and save less lives through JRF…. Not only that but I’ve robbed myself of the opportunity to gain the self worth associated with those things… Plus it sucked!
I know many of you will think I’m being harsh on myself but that’s the point of this post. If you don’t guard your time ferociously it will get filled with unimportant things and you will have at best a mediocre life.
Think about this – if you redirected 30 mins a day that you currently spend doing unimportant, unfulfilling things you would have an extra 3.5 hours a week or 182 hours per year to direct to the things most important to you!
It’s important to identify things you need to stop doing, things that waste your time and give you little results. This will leave you more time for the things you value most improving your life instantly and dramatically. Here’s my list for today – what’s on your list? Let me know in the comments
Jake’s Stop Doing List!
- Moving house (next time I will outsource more eg: cleaners etc and be more organised to have it all done on one day).
- Driving to the shops to get food. I often duck out 2-3 times per day to get food. To fix this and save me time I’ve ordered a stack of pre packaged healthy meals.
- Monitoring Facebook pages (I often get stuck checking comments etc on our pages – we have about 5 which can be time consuming and easily managed by one of our team). Today while I’m sitting here watching the wall get painted I will write the system for our team to follow meaning one less job for me every single day!
Just these simple things alone will save me somewhere between 30 mins and 1 hour per day which I will put to use doing the things that are most important and valuable to me like finding and training team members, marketing, improving systems etc...
Not only will this make me happier but it will mean I can help many more people and save many more lives! That’s a fair bit more important than checking the facebook comments don’t you think
Dedicated to your fitness success,
Jake
